Kingsley is a potter working in Brookline, Massachusetts, who has been making and selling her work since 1993.  Her formal training and professional background are in architecture, which arose out of her simultaneous interests in function and design. A casual venture into the world of clay turned out to be transformative, because she’s also passionate about actually making things.

Her work always begins with a slab of clay, dried to a point where it is stiff enough to hold its shape but still malleable. The flat pieces are cut freehand, then joined and literally massaged together. Sometimes decoration is carved in at this point, while the clay is still soft. Other surface patterns may be added after the first firing, using a liquid wax to selectively resist the application of glaze.

"Many of my designs are inspired by decorative motifs in buildings, nature and textiles.  I delight in the slight inexactness of handwork. The marks reflect the tools and the hands that made them.  No two designs are ever alike - rather, each one builds on the ones that came before. My recent work continues my fascination with pattern, introducing motifs from nature and a broader use of color.”

Kingsley has been a member of Feet of Clay Pottery in Brookline Village since 1991.  Her work is currently available at the Sign of the Dove gallery in Cambridge, every September at the Jamaica Plain Open Studios, the Holiday Sale at Feet of Clay, or by personal appointment.
